What are the Reasons People Use Egg Donation?

When it becomes impossible for a woman to conceive due to poor egg quality or from having no eggs at all, she may still become pregnant through using an egg donor. There are many women who donate their eggs. Most often they do so in order to help a struggling individual or couple to achieve their dream of having children - and the process can truly be rewarding for all who are involved.

Today, the use of donated eggs has become much more common than it was even just a few years ago. One reason for this is that women who are over the age of 40 are wishing to start or expand their family.

Another factor is that over the years, the process has become much more successful. In addition, in relation to other types of assisted reproduction, women who use fresh embryos have an over 43 percent chance of becoming pregnant in each cycle.

Why Use Donated Eggs

All situations are different, but there are several good reasons to consider the use of donated eggs when planning to have a child. These may include:

● The potential to transmit a genetic disease to the child
● Poor quality eggs of the mother
● Premature ovarian failure in which menopause has begun earlier than usual
● Diminished ovarian reserve
● A history of pregnancy failure

Reasons Why Women Donate Their Eggs

Women may donate their eggs for numerous reasons. Most tend to be driven by the satisfaction and happiness that they receive by being able to help someone begin or expand their family. Oftentimes, egg donors are family members or friends of those who wish to conceive but are unable to do so naturally. However, in many cases, the donors who work through clinics are matched up with individuals or couples that they previously did not know.

According to a study conducted by the American Society for reproductive Medicine, of 100 women who were surveyed, 68 stated that helping somebody was their number one reason for donating their eggs.

Another 29 percent noted that they were enticed by the financial compensation that they were given for their egg donation. Of this same group that was surveyed, 100 percent of the egg donors reported that they would donate their eggs again.

Other Factors to Consider

In most cases, the egg donor remains anonymous to the recipient. However, there are some instances where an individual or couple may wish to meet their donor - if they do not already know her.

There is typically a legal aspect of egg donation that is involved which may spell out any type of future relationship that the donor may or may not have with the child, as well as how and how often the donor may receive updates regarding the child if she wishes to do so. Most egg donor programs and clinics will conduct extensive screening processes in order to ensure that the egg donor is healthy both physically and psychologically prior to moving forward.
